German SMEs on Amazon have seen their international sales grow by 10 percent over the past year. Together, they earned 5.5 billion euros in cross-border sales. “Exporting via Amazon is the easiest growth opportunity for German SMEs”, headlines the American company.

Amazon reports on the sales performance of German small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) once again. The international sales growth of 10 percent in 2023 matches the growth rate of 2022: also 10 percent. While that growth was partly due to the influx of new sellers, last year the number of German SMEs remained steady at around 47,500 sellers. Therefore, the growth can be considered incremental, excluding inflation.

Employment

Amazon reports that these 47,500 SMEs now employ more people for sales on the platform. This accounts for 170,000 jobs in Germany, ten thousand more than the previous year. Thus, the American company, which dominates ecommerce in Germany and significantly influences offline retail in the country, also indirectly employs more Germans.

80% sell internationally

According to Amazon, 80 percent of German SME traders also sell internationally on the platform. “A global seller account is now as easy as booking a holiday trip”, the company states. “This and the numerous tools – such as Fulfillment by Amazon or AI-based translation and content tools – help SMEs reach millions of customers worldwide.”

According to Amazon, SMEs now account for more than 60 percent of the products sold on Amazon worldwide.

1,400 products per minute

Companies from Germany together sold more than 750 million products on the Amazon Marketplace in 2023. “That equates to more than 1,400 products per minute,” calculates Amazon, which regularly releases reports to emphasize its value to local European markets, such as recently in Spain.
